Terma-Terma Bagi Bidang Optometris

1) What is Optometry?

op·tom·e·try (äpˈtämətrē/noun)

The practice or profession of examining the eyes for visual defects and prescribing corrective lenses. Optometry is the profession that provides primary eye care to the community.

The term "optometry" comes from the Greek words ὄψις (opsis; "view") and μέτρον (metron; "something used to measure", "measure", "rule"). The word entered the language when the instrument for measuring vision was called an optometer, (before the terms phoropter or refractor were used). The root word opto is a shortened form derived from the Greek word ophthalmos meaning, "eye."

Optometrists are primary health care specialists trained to examine the eyes to detect defects in vision, signs of injury, ocular diseases or abnormality and problems with general health. Optometrists help people who have problems with their eyes or have difficulty seeing.

Optometrists are expert in the optics of lenses that can be used to correct refractive errors. Optometrists measure refractive errors and prescribe glasses that accurately correct the out of focus error and restore normal vision. Not only will they advise you on the best way of solving with your eye problem they will also take personal responsibility to see that any prescription for glasses is accurately dispensed to the highest standards and will make sure that the lenses and spectacle frames used are the best choice for your personal needs.

Optometrists make a health assessment, offer clinical advice and when necessary prescribe spectacles or contact lenses. In addition, optometrists can dispense, fit and supply spectacles or contact lenses.

Optometrists study at university for at least three years and must participate in a period of assessed clinical training in practice, before being deemed to have the knowledge and skills needed to be registered. Once registered, they have the opportunity to take further qualifications and develop their interests in specialist areas of practice.

Optometrists are registered health professionals. All optometrists practising in Malaysia are placed under the Optical Act 1991 and must be registered with the Malaysian Optical Council, the profession’s regulatory body.

Optometrists and optometry-related organizations interact with governmental agencies, other healthcare professionals, and the community to deliver eye and vision care.

There are currently 3,378 registered optometrists in the Malaysia.

Some examples include contacts following injury or corneal transplantation, contacts for decompensated cornea such as bullous keratopathy and corneal laceration, contacts with artificial iris, and contacts for eye conditions such as keratoconus, advanced keratoconus and aphakia.
